The Night-Time Economy

‘Welcome to Bowen Hills’, the newest addition to the King Street precinct, was the scene of the Property Council’s latest retail event – exploring the future of the night-time economy.

The evening cocktail event, held on Tuesday 19 June, saw a conversation with some of the sector’s leading thinkers on what it takes to curate a compelling night-time experience and how it has become a necessity for successful retail properties.

Phil Schoutrop, Principal and Director – The Buchan Group,  provided an overview presentation outlining key examples of how the night time offer has evolved over recent years. Phil spoke to case studies of exceptional night time retail experiences, as well as analysing the lessons from properties which have not achieved success with after-hours initiatives.

Following Phil’s presentation, Kym Thrift, Retail Leasing Executive with AMP Capital, moderated a wide-ranging panel session on the topic with Matt Denham, General Manager – Uber Eats and Andrew Hay, Development Director – Investment Management, Lendlease.

Matt spoke to the experience of Uber Eats and the changing patterns of night time consumers. Matt also outlined the changing physical requirements of tenants looking to leverage online delivery services to grow their businesses.

Andrew provided compelling insights into Lendlease’s development journey with the Showgrounds and King Street precinct, and reflected on how the project team have sought to be on the cutting edge of the night-time economy.

The Property Council would like to thank Phil, Kym, Matt and Andrew for sharing their insights with our members and guests.

The next event in the Property Council’s 2018 retail event series will be ‘A Conversation with Guy Russo’ breakfast on 9 August.
