Synergising SEQ

The Property Council has released a new thought piece aimed at stimulating debate about how South East Queensland’s future growth will be coordinated, managed and governed.

The document poses serious questions about the most effective way of administering the SEQ region’s growth.

The ‘Creating a successful metropolitan governance model for South East Queensland paper, produced for the Property Council by Arup Australia, investigates options to achieve greater coordination between infrastructure and land use planning.

The paper identifies a range of governance tools at the disposal of state and local governments and explores some exemplar models from Australia and overseas. These range from the establishment of private sector advisory bodies, through to heavier handed interventions, like statutory special purpose delivery bodies.

Some of the global best-practice models explored in the paper are the UK’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and NSW’s ‘Greater Sydney Commission’, which have been charged with achieving consistency in strategic planning and delivery across their respective jurisdictions.

The Property Council has long advocated for greater coordination between State Government departments, the various local governments, infrastructure delivery bodies, service delivery agencies and other statutory entities that are responsible for facilitating SEQ’s growth.

A think tank session, held at MinterEllison on Tuesday 16 October, provided Queensland industry leaders with an opportunity to explore this topic with Arup’s Global Cities Leader – Jerome Frost OBE.

The Property Council will use the thought piece as part of its ongoing advocacy efforts to achieve a more productive and prosperous South East Queensland.
