Sydneysiders get the case for asset recyclingNew research commissioned by a coalition of business groups shows that Sydneysiders understand the case for asset recycling to pay for new infrastructure. The polling was commissioned by the Property Council, Infrastructure Partnerships Australia and Australian Industry Group. It showed:Over four out of five (83.6 percent) of Sydneysiders are ‘concerned’ or ‘very concerned’ by urban congestionA majority of voters favour asset recycling over increased taxes or service cuts as the preferred way to pay for new infrastructure73 percent want the revenue from asset recycling from the poles and wires to go into new infrastructure, rather than reducing debt or more spending on public services, andTransport projects are the favoured beneficiary of the proceeds (at 45 percent) followed by health, schools and water among Sydneysiders. It was released ahead of the State election – where the Government is proposing a $20 billion infrastructure spend, with Labor saying it would be more restrained due to its opposition to leasing the poles and wires. The Property Council’s NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said the findings are no surprise.”Sydneysiders are tired of living in a congested city with neglected infrastructure and understand governments need to find sensible ways to pay for new projects,” Mr Byres said.”They see the case for investment in new rail and road projects – and creating a substantial new pool of funds to provide them is what asset recycling achieves.”Major new projects give Sydney a chance to enhance its standing as a global city, lift productivity and connect new and emerging markets across the metropolitan area.”
