Sunshine Coast’s infrastructure game changers explored

The first Property Council Sunshine Coast lunch for the year saw a sold-out crowd hear from local policymakers on the infrastructure projects required to drive the region’s future growth.

Over 1 property professionals attended The Lakehouse at Brightwater, on Friday 3 March, to assess the merits of new infrastructure proposals and the opportunities they could present for the property industry.

Local Property Council Committee Chairman, Ben Simpson -Regional Manager, North Region Stockland Residential Communities (QLD) – began the event with an overview of the infrastructure landscape on the Sunshine Coast, outlining the growth challenges that need to be met by new infrastructure investment.

Mayor Mark Jamieson provided a keynote presentation, outlining Sunshine Coast Council’s funding priorities for the region and how he is working within the SEQ City Deal framework to advance several key local projects. The Mayor floated a proposal to develop a convention centre on the Sunshine Coast at the new Maroochydore CBD, funded through private investment as part of an Integrated Resort Development.

Following the Mayor’s presentation, Ben Simpson moderated a panel discussion with Ted O’Brien MP, Federal Member for Fairfax, and Barbara van Heerden, Regional Director – Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The illuminating discussion canvassed light rail to heavy rail, expanded highways to digital highways. Following the discussion, an audience poll tested opinion on which project proposals are truly game-changers for the Sunshine Coast. The results to the question ‘Where would you like to see infrastructure investment directed?’ were:

  • Sunshine Coast Light Rail  15%
  • North Coast Connect        59%
  • Mooloolah River Interchange  6%
  • Undersea Cable  20%

The Property Council would like to thank the speakers for sharing the insights with our Sunshine Coast members and guests, and Rider Levett Bucknall for their sponsorship of the lunch.
