Showcasing our CBD
On August 20th the Property Council’s Future Directions Committee held a successful event -‘Showcasing our CBD’ – which was attended by over 110 property professionals.
The cocktail event provided an overview of the evolution of the Brisbane CBD through the City Centre Master Plan released by Brisbane City Council in 2014, with a focus on the key changes that are anticipated in the CBD over the coming years.
The event commenced with James Tuma, National Director, Design, Urbis providing an overview of the City Centre Master Plan. James went through the rationale which underpinned the Master Plan, and discussed the 10 City Making Moves, which form the basis for many of the outcomes proposed through the Master Plan. James also focused on a number of the priority projects including Queens Wharf, Howard Smith Wharves, Edward Street and Albert Street.
James’ presentation was followed by a Q and A panel discussion, moderated by Riye Arai-Coupe, Chair of the Future Directions Committee and Senior Development Manager, Mirvac. The panel included James Tuma, Chris McCluskey, General Manager, Development Services, ISPT and Kerry Doss, Manager City Planning and Economic Development Branch, City Planning and Sustainability Division, Brisbane City Council.
The panel discussion resulted in some interesting responses from the panellists regarding the future of the CBD. Insights included the need for a decision on a new river rail crossing, incentives Brisbane City Council have in place to promote types of development, and the comparative advantages Brisbane enjoys by having one Council for the entire metropolitan area.
The panellists acknowledged the full realisation of the Master Plan would take some time to achieve, it was noted that there would be changes occurring in the short term which will point to the wider evolution of the City Centre.
The Property Council would like to thank our speakers and moderator for providing their insights and the Future Directions Committee for their work on this event. We would also like to thank our principal sponsor Savills Project Management and supporting sponsor KPMG SGA, without whose support the Future Directions Series would not be possible.
