Shaking up the City’s Skyline
A city on the cusp of great change, was the defining message of the Property Council’s Queensland Breakfast: Shaking up the City’s Skyline, held Wednesday 29 August at Brisbane’s newest venue, the W Hotel.
Ben Slack, Regional Director of Urbis, provided an overview of the changes in store for the Brisbane CBD. Among the list of exciting new developments, Ben stated that Howard Smith Wharves, Eagle St Pier, Brisbane Live, Cross River Rail and Brisbane Metro present great opportunities for Brisbane, “the city is in a dynamic state at the moment, it is experiencing significant growth and change.”
Following Ben’s overview of these exciting upcoming projects, attendees received detailed development overviews from those involved in the creation of 80 Ann Street, The Annex and Midtown Centre.
Simon Healy, General Manager of Commercial Development for Mirvac, spoke to the additional space due to enter the Brisbane CBD market by 2022. Of this, 80 Ann Street provides 23 floors, with Suncorp already pre-committing to 40,000m2 of space across both upper and lower floors.
Matthew Beasley, Office Development – Queensland for Dexus, shared the progress of The Annex, which is due to be completed at the end of 2019. A mid-rise project of 14 storeys, the development sits at the heart of the city, featuring an operable façade, a sky terrace and 625m2 floor plates.
Finally, Michael Bruderlin, Project Director for the Midtown Centre, spoke to the spectacular redevelopment of the ‘two ugly sisters’ into a single 26-storey commercial tower. The Midtown Centre embraces Brisbane City Council’s ‘Buildings that Breathe’ guidelines, emphasising the natural environment through its design, while the original heritage-listed façade at the Charlotte Street entrance will be restored.
“It is a wonderful benchmark for the future repurposing of commercial buildings,” said Kirsti Simpson, Principal of Hassell and moderator of the event.
The Property Council would like to thank Ben, Simon, Matthew, Michael and Kirsti for their contribution to the event, our sponsor – RCP, and support sponsor – Urbis.
