SEQ City Deal Statement of Intent Signed
After six years of collaboration between SEQ local governments and the Queensland Government, a South East Queensland City Deal Statement of Intent was signed by all three levels of government, on Friday 15 March 2019.
The Property Council of Australia welcomed the commitment to developing an SEQ City Deal, with the document being signed by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, Chair of the Council of Mayors (SEQ); Hon Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships; and Hon Alan Tudge MP, Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population.
The Statement of Intent is the next step towards securing a City Deal for the SEQ region, which would ensure all three levels of government are aligned on strategies to drive the local economy, improve connectivity and handle the needs of a growing population.
The Property Council has advocated for an SEQ City Deal for six years, jointly funding the initial scoping work in conjunction with the Council of Mayors (SEQ) and Queensland Government.
The signing of the Statement of Intent was followed by a Property Council lunch event – attended by more than 5 industry and government members- where the three levels of government further outlined their commitment to delivery of the Deal.
While the Statement of Intent sets out some basic principles for negotiating the Deal, the final SEQ City Deal is due to be signed mid-2020. Details of the Deal with be negotiated over the coming twelve months, however the Queensland Government’s Transforming SEQ: The SEQ City Deal Proposition, sets out a shared vision for the Deal and identifies many of the key opportunities.
