Sarah Constructions: Respect & Reward For Women In Construction

Property is South Australia’s second biggest employer and yet, historically, the majority of people working in property construction have been male. Now we are seeing a shift in this trend and one business leading the way for women in property is Sarah Constructions.

Master Builders South Australia’s 2017 Commercial Builder of the Year, Sarah Constructions has more than doubled its number of female staff since mid-2016. Not only is Sarah Constructions actively encouraging women to enter the industry, via its Graduate, Trainee Supervisor, and Leadership programs, but its female employees are gaining industry recognition.

Project Manager, Melisha Willington recently won the NAWIC award for Outstanding Achievement in Construction. Described as “an exceptional Project Manager who excels in all aspects of her role,” Melisha is “paving the way for all young women” and “an inspiration among her peers.”

In fact, Sarah Constructions encourages women to work in all roles, including site roles, which have traditionally had the lowest female representation. Trainee Site Supervisor, Adele Munro-Chambers, had over a decade of trade and construction experience behind her when she joined the Sarah team. She says, “there’s definitely respect and reward for women working in construction.”

With property ranking as South Australia’s largest industry, it is fantastic to see more women entering the workforce and overturning traditional gender stereotypes to find success and recognition in property construction.
