Review of Occupational Licensing
In 2013 Government undertook to review the building industry licensing model through reviewing relevant legislation and how current licensing was administered.
Government has approved the move to an administrative licensing model which will include the:
- Repeal of existing licensing legislation
- Drafting of a single piece of legislation referred to as the Building-related Occupation Licensing legislation (BROL)
- Repeal of the existing Boards and Committee
- Creation of a single industry board – the Building Industry Board (BIB); and
- Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NTCAT) as the body for reviewing licensing and disciplinary decisions and conducting inquiries into professional misconduct.
The establishment of a non-statutory Transitional Advisory Board sees the replacement of all six Boards and Committee (refer diagram below).
Information sessions and consultation with members affected by the occupational licensing reforms and amendments to the Building Act are currently underway.
