Retirement Living reforms update

Following a meeting with Consumer Protection and other industry groups, the Property Council has settled on an approach in responding to Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (CRIS) 2 into the Retirement Villages Act review.

Continuing the strong cross-sector efforts, representatives from the Property Council and Retirement Living Council agreed with Leading Age Services Australia and Aged & Community Services Australia that industry would reserve its right to comment on the 195-page CRIS2 document pending the release of further papers. This is on the back of discussions late last year with Commerce Minister John Quigley and is consistent with the Joint Industry Group’s approach to CRIS1 – the first paper in a series of six consultation papers.

In consultation with affected members, it was decided that the full picture of reforms was needed to understand how certain proposals would impact on other elements of the retirement living business. This includes monitoring of similar issues and proposals in operation interstate, as well as responding to other issues the industry is currently facing, including the coronavirus outbreak.

Engagement between the joint industry groups, the Western Australian Retirement Villages Residents Association and Consumer Protection is ongoing and will continue throughout the reforms process.
