RETIREMENT LIVING: LOOKING AHEAD IN 2020
Over 100 retirement living professionals attended the Property Council’s 2020 Retirement Living Outlook at MinterEllison.
Attendees heard from industry experts on current market conditions for seniors living as they analysed data and legislation to understand what the next decade will bring. The event was moderated by Kim Teudt, General Manager Retirement Living – Blue Care.
Paul Riga, Director – Urbis provided a snapshot of the current market by analysing recent supply-side trends in seniors housing across South-East Queensland. His analysis focused on new alternative models for retirement living such as manufactured homes and how they were becoming more prevalent in comparison with traditional retirement living models.
Pauline Barton, Stockland’s Regional Manager of Development and Operations provided insight into how Stockland was shaping its retirement portfolio to respond to current and emerging needs in seniors housing. Pauline also discussed the emerging trend of vertical retirement villages and the challenges associated with delivering this type of product.
Executive Director of Imagine Projects – Emma Plaiser detailed Imagine Projects’ outlook for 2020 by looking at how current sentiment might impact demand. Emma also addressed how an oversupply of retirement accommodation in some locations will make new development projects difficult to get off the ground.
After each speaker had provided individual analysis, they joined together for a lively panel discussion. The discussion was focused on supply and demand factors and how to cater for long term demand from an ageing baby-boomer generation without creating an oversupply problem in the near term.
