Retail Shop Leases Act report

The Queensland Parliament’s Education, Tourism and Small Business Committee has recommended that the Government’s Retail Shop Leases Amendment Bill 2015 be passed.

Following almost five years of Government consultation with stakeholders on proposed amendments to the legislation, the Committee tabled its report in Parliament on 4 February.

A number of improvements to the legislation are proposed, most notably the exclusion from the legislation of retail shops with a floor area greater than 1,000m2.

The Property Council’s submission to the Committee’s investigation, which noted additional opportunities for red tape reduction, can be found here.

The Bill is expected to be debated in Parliament during the current sitting and will take effect from a date yet to be determined.

Over the coming months, the Property Council will hold a number of workshops in Brisbane and Townsville on the implications of the changes to the Retail Shop Leases Act.
