Report reveals threat of looming seniors housing crisis
The Property Council of Australia has recently released a report signalling a looming seniors housing crisis without “urgent change” to local and state planning systems.
The research by RPS warns of an increase to the reliance on tax-payer funded public aged care should the shortfall not be addressed as the over 65 population doubles in the next decade.
RPS recommends a suite of actions including setting retirement living housing targets, fast-tracked approvals and making retirement living a permissible development in all residential zones.
The report sets out that without such changes, investment in new retirement villages will stagnate, leaving older Australians with fewer housing options that support healthy ageing and independent living.
