Renewing Old Strata Schemes
The Property Council has kick-started a community discussion about the need to renew old strata schemes in Perth.
The review of WA’s antiquated strata laws is considering a raft of reforms, including a proposal to permit a majority of unit holders in old strata schemes to redevelop the property.
The Property Council supports the strata reform process, including the introduction of strata renewals by majority vote. The problem with the current laws is that a single unit owner can hold up the plans by the other unit holders to renew ageing strata properties. The renewal of old strata schemes has a large role in increasing the rate of urban infill in metropolitan Perth.
The Minister for Lands, Terry Redman said he personally supported the proposal and it would be considered as part of a review by Landgate, which would then be considered by Cabinet.
