Recasting Retirement Living
The Property Council’s final Retirement Living event for 2017, Recasting Retirement Living, was held on Tuesday 10 October.
The sold out event provided an opportunity to hear from Robin Lyons – Partner, MinterEllison – on the proposed changes to the Retirement Villages Act 1999 that are currently before parliament as part of the Housing (Building Better Futures) Legislation Amendment Bill 2017. Robin stepped the audience through a number of changes including the proposed new pre-contractual disclosure documents and the process for redeveloping a village.
Following Robin’s presentation, he was joined by Alison Quinn – CEO RetireAutralia and President of the Retirement Living Council, and Emma Plasier – Principal and Director, Shine Retirement, to discuss the industry’s response to the current negative portrayal of the retirement village industry through the media. The discussion was moderated by Aileen Stewart – Regional Manager Operations, Retirement Living QLD/NSW/ACT – Stockland and Chair of the Queensland Retirement Living Committee.
Alison discussed the details of the RLC’s 8-point plan, and Emma spoke about the feedback she is receiving from prospective residents and shared her thoughts on what the industry as a whole needs to do to remain an attractive housing option for seniors.
At the breakfast former soldier and police officer Terry Byway was awarded the Queensland Programmed Village Manager of the Year award in recognition for his work with 540 residents at Lendlease’s Buderim Gardens Retirement Village on the Sunshine Coast.
The Property Council would like to thank Robin for his keynote presentation, Alison and Emma for their contribution during the panel discussion and Aileen for moderating. The Retirement Living Series would not be possible without the support of our sponsor, MinterEllison.
