Queensland Waste Levy Commences

After a delayed introduction, the Queensland waste levy will take effect on Monday 1 July 2019.

The waste levy was introduced in the 2018/19 Queensland State Budget and adds a $70-$1 charge per tonne to all waste distributed to Queensland landfill sites.

Originally intended to be introduced in January 2019, the government delayed the start date until 1 July 2019.

In this year’s budget, the government indicated that the Queensland waste levy is expected to generate $433 million.

The Property Council provided feedback to the government last year, which raised concerns about the increased cost to the construction of new homes and the inevitable flow on impacts to Queensland households.
