Queensland planning policy update

A number of local and state government related planning decisions impacting the property sector have been released.

New Model Code for Neighbourhood Design

Queensland Government has released a new model code for neighbourhood design, and is proposing to make parts of the code mandatory.

Planning changes within the code include:

  • Grid-like street networks with fewer cul-de-sacs
  • footpaths complemented by street trees on both sides of most streets
  • street blocks no longer than 130m with longer blocks having mid-block pedestrian breaks
  • parks and open spaces within comfortable walking distance of every dwelling.

The Queensland Government is seeking feedback on what parts of the code to make mandatory with consultation closing on 1 September 2019.

Additional Consultation for Moreton Bay Planning Scheme Amendment

Moreton Bay Regional Council has extended the consultation on their proposed planning scheme amendment.

Key issues included within the planning scheme amendment include:

•Improvements to cater for carports and secondary dwellings in residential areas, and sheds in rural residential areas

•Changes to encourage the efficient use of land within walking distances of commercial centres and train stations, and further clarify the design and location of service stations

•Enhancements to 14 planning scheme policies to improve their usability and ensure they are up-to date and fit for purpose

•Introduction of a new planning scheme policy for Township Character which aims to encourage unique design solutions that reinforce a sense of rural identity and character.

Consultation closes on Monday 19 August 2019.
