Queensland Lunch: Investing in Education

The Property Council’s Queensland Lunch: Investing in Education, which took place on Thursday 30 May, gave university executives a platform to speak to the importance of social infrastructure assets and their integration into the wider community.

Professor Barney Glover AO, Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University, gave a fascinating presentation on the latest developments being undertaken by Western Sydney University, including their innovative vertical tower in the Parramatta CBD.

In partnership with Charter Hall, the tower presents co-location opportunities for students and the business sector, allowing an easy and flexible integration of students and the workforce. The off-campus location also presents a wider option of amenities, employment opportunities and increased exposure to the urban environment.

Professor Glover was joined by Andrew Borger, Head of Office Development – Charter Hall, Graham Fryer, Vice-President (Resources) and Chief Financial Officer – QUT, and Dr Scott Snyder, Chief Operating Officer of Sunshine Coast University, for a panel discussion moderated by Jen Williams, Deputy Executive Director – Property Council of Australia.

The lively panel discussion explored the need for ‘sticky’ university campuses, exploring the strategies used to attract students to attend campus facilities, in preference to the online learning platforms that are becoming increasingly available.

Panellists also spoke to the invaluable partnerships that higher education assets seek with other industries, including the health and property sectors, and how effective and reliable infrastructure is integral to the success of their facility.
