Queensland Breakfast: Co-located Communities

At the final Queensland Retirement Living Breakfast for 2018, industry leaders discussed the fantastic opportunities offered by co-locating seniors’ housing with established neighbourhood uses, such as churches, educational facilities and bowls clubs.

Alison McDonagh, Regional Developments Manager, Apartments – Stockland, spoke to the recently completed Cardinal Freeman project and the highly anticipated, Epping Project. Currently under development, the Epping Project is a retirement village and residential aged care development co-located with a church and school.

Following Alison’s presentation, Stewart Scott – Greengate, provided his insights on the co-location of seniors housing and his experience with projects, including the award-winning St Luke’s development at Woolloongabba.

Simon Pollock – RPS, joined Alison and Stewart for a panel discussion which was moderated by Kerrianne Meulman – Urban Economics.

The panel explored the opportunities and challenges that arise from co-located developments and discussed how surrounding communities can benefit from the new services provided by these developments, such as child care facilities and coffee shops.

The event also awarded Sue Stevens, Senior Village Manager at Carlyle Gardens in Condon, a facility operated by Bluecare, Queensland winner of the Village Manager of the Year Award for 2018. The Programmed Award for Village Manager of the Year is part of the National Retirement Living Awards, which recognises the contribution and achievements across all areas of the retirement living sector.

The Property Council would like to congratulate Sue and thank Alison, Stewart, Simon and Kerrianne for speaking at the event. Thank you also to MinterEllison for hosting the Retirement Living breakfast series.
