Property Council Victorian Growth Summit 2014
The Property Council’s highly anticipated Victorian Growth Summit on 8 October was a huge success with over 240 attendees from across the property industry.
In addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with growth, the speakers focused on a range of topics including social and physical infrastructure, design, population growth and ageing, housing supply, planning, governance, investment and liveability.
Urban renewal was one of the key themes of the Summit. Paul Bryne, Director, Economic Planning and Development, MPA and Gregory Anderson, CEO, Places Victoria provided an overview of forthcoming development opportunities, whilst examining the drivers of investment. One of the highlights of the Summit included a keynote presentation by John Tabart, CEO of the Barangaroo Development Authority who shared with attendees his insights from managing several of Australia’s biggest urban redevelopment projects.
In a session focusing on cost issues around Melbourne’s housing market, Roger Gibbins of Urbis presented some key findings from the Property Council’s latest research into housing affordability. This was followed by a panel discussion involving Robert Papaleo from Charter Keck Cramer and David Mayes from the City of Melbourne, discussing the various contributing factors and possible solutions to the affordability problem.
The conversation also addressed apartment living with a look at how best practice design could challenge preconceived notions of high density housing.
Lastly the Property Council’s CEO Ken Morrison released a major piece of research by the Property Council and KPMG on infrastructure funding using the UK City Deals model.
