CUT BUILDING RED TAPE: SUMMIT

The Property Council attended a Building Industry Summit in Perth which work shopped proposals to cut red tape in the building approvals process, particularly in local government.

Premier Colin Barnett opened the summit which was attended by the Minister for Planning John Day, Minister for Local Government Tony Simpson and the Minister for Commerce Michael Mischin.

There was a distinct focus on identifying opportunities for simpler and more consistent building, planning and local government processes. Another hot topic of conversation surrounded the need for changes to the R-Codes to promote infill development and the urgent need for a standard on line building licence application with local governments.

This included discussions regarding the importance of reforms for commercial and retirement living building regulations and local government rate rebates to apartment developers that fund and operate private waste collections.

The Property Council will be following up these conversations with formal approaches to the Ministers to ensure that swift action is taken to remedy these matters.
