Property Council joins forces to call for Perth Parking Levy suspension

Following our submission to the State Government on the Perth Parking Levy, the Property Council has thrown its weight behind a concerted campaign to #ParkTheLevy.

A joint letter, co-signed by Activate Perth, Property Council WA, the Australian Hotels Association WA and local community groups in West Perth and East Perth, spells out the impact the Perth Parking Levy is having on businesses within the inner city core. The letter goes onto say that Perth Parking Levy revenue already received for 2019-20 should be refunded, with a further 12-month suspension of revenue collection for the upcoming financial year.

It is believed the Perth Parking Levy fund, which has historically been used to fund other CBD based transport services such as CAT Bus routes and cycle paths, is currently worth $130 million. The current annual charges on landlords for parking bays in the Perth CBD, West Perth, East Perth and Northbridge ranges between $1,038.90 and $1,169.20 per car bay, depending on whether it is on or off-street parking. This represents a real impact for landlords and tenants in circumstances where both the car parks and the services funded by the levy are not being used.

Signatories to the letter have called for some of the money raised to be repurposed to be spent on city rejuvenation projects to help the city rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic. You can view the open letter to the State Government here and find out about how you support the campaign.
