Planning reforms for recovery motor on
Work continues on representing industry through two key pieces of planning reforms brought forward to assist the recovery from COVID-19.
The R-Codes Review, released on July 11, aims to provide additional clarity around deemed-to-comply rules and a simplification of calculation methods for certain measurement requirements. Proposed changes focus heavily on issues such as the provision of outdoor living spaces, setback limits and requirements, as well as the treatment of patios and car ports.
The draft Local Planning Scheme regulations were released for public comment on 20 August and progress the State Government’s announcements to reduce red tape and cost in the planning system for local businesses.
Some of the changes include amendments to Change of Use applications, the removal of Development Approvals for smaller scale residential work, more flexibility in Cash-In-Lieu for commercial carparking and standardised processes for public consultation across different local governments.
These two pieces complement the creation of the Special Development Assessment Unit (SDAU), providing as assessment pathway for major projects worth over $20 million, over the next 18 months. This unit was established following strong advocacy from the Property Council, who is closely monitoring the early stages of the SDAU’s work.
