  • February 26, 2015

Planning for Brisbane’s City WestBrisbane City Council is preparing the City West Renewal Strategy (the Strategy) to replace the 28 year old Petrie Terrace and Spring Hill Local Plan. The Strategy will guide future development and promote economic and cultural activity in the area. The City West was identified as a key area for future revitalisation into an integrated lifestyle hub in the City Centre Master Plan 2014. The development of the Strategy is the first step in planning for the area and will be followed by a City West Neighbourhood Plan including all necessary statutory changes to Brisbane’s planning scheme. This neighbourhood plan will require community and industry consultation following the State Government’s State interest check. In developing the Strategy, Brisbane City Council intends to: promote a high standard of design for buildings and public space protect areas of significant character and heritage value, while identifying opportunities for new development enhance the precinct’s role as an events and entertainment destination improve pedestrian and cycle access between the precinct, the city centre and the surrounding suburbs update and simplify the local planning framework.Given the considerable role our members will have in the revitalisation of this area, the Property Council is keen to remain involved in the future evolution of the Strategy and subsequent neighbourhood plan. The release of the draft strategy is mooted for mid 2015 with the draft neighbourhood plan to be released before the end of the year. Nominations to be part of the City West Community Planning Team are currently open, and interested members should contact the project team. In addition, Brisbane City Council has this week passed the Draft City Centre Neighbourhood Plan which will be available on Council’s website within the next week.
