I am very humbled to the recipient of the Peter Trathen Memorial Scholarship for 2022. As of 2 days ago (!) I completed the final assessment for my Bachelor of Business, majoring in Real Estate and Property Development, and Management at Griffith University. My apologies for not being able to attend today as I am in Paris, due to race the UCI Track Cycling World Championships which start on Thursday.
I am very excited for the opportunities and networking this scholarship will enable me.
My interest was sparked by my parents purchasing and developing smaller scale developments and the long term assets and freedom that granted them. I was also raised on the Sunshine Coast where I am in awe of the masterplanning of the space and the level of detail and consideration corporations, such as the Walker Corporation, emphasis’ in their developments. I love that it aligns with the ‘vibe’ of the Sunshine Coast, and instead of just building buildings for the sake of growth in the area, it enhances the space, keeping the great aspects of the Sunshine Coast. I aim to also create prosperous, vibrant societies through strategic planning and communicating with the people in the place to understand their life and lifestyle.
I am very excited to pick the minds of people who I aspire to work with in the future.
I can not thank the Property Council of Australia, and Griffith University enough for this opportunity.
About the Peter Trathen Memorial Scholarship
The Scholarship was established to pay tribute to the contribution Peter Trathen made to the property industry and Gold Coast business community. Peter moved to the Coast in 1993 from his native South Africa, working for Jupiters to develop the Brisbane casino.
In 2000, he took the lead role in the development of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. Peter was a strong advocate of education and continuing professional development. He actively encouraged young people to seek and develop careers in the property industry. Peter lost his private battle with the most virulent strain of skin cancer, melanoma, on 12 July 2010.
This scholarship provides an undergraduate student who has achieved outstanding results in the field of real estate property development within the Griffith Business School access to $5,000 worth of Property Council membership, events attendance, professional development courses and industry publications.
