Perth Children’s Hospital – An Eye-opener
Property Council members who recently visited the Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) were impressed by the quality, technology, and design features of the facility, which is nearing completion.
The 36 members were part of site tours organised by the project’s Managing Contractor, John Holland.
A second site visit had to be organised on the back of positive feedback from the first tour.
Visit organiser, Ronan Cosgrove, Business Development Manager WA for John Holland, said it’s a pleasure to show people around the world-class facility.
“PCH is setting new benchmarks in paediatric healthcare. The reaction of PCA members mirrors that of everyone who visits the hospital,” said Ronan.
“People are genuinely surprised by the quality of the hospital, from both a technology and aesthetic viewpoint, as well as the attention to detail. All the features combine to make it a truly inspiring place to visit.”
Of particular interest to members was the focus of the hospital design to aid the healing process.
“PCH incorporates a number of design features that have been proven to improve healthcare outcomes of patients, such as abundant natural light and increased use of fresh air,” said Ronan.
In keeping with this focus, all in-patient rooms have views to the outdoors and enjoy natural light. The hospital also takes advantage of its proximity to neighbouring Kings Park, which was the inspiration for many of the interior design elements, including the colour palette and floor coverings.
PCH is also leading the way in technology. An intraoperative MRI machine means doctors can conduct an MRI while a patient is in surgery, a procedure that is currently not possible at PMH.
Another feature of the hospital is its focus on providing support for families.
“Every floor with in-patient rooms has a family lounge area, plus there are facilities for caregivers to rest in most in-patient rooms,” said Ronan.
“A special feature is a 12-room family accommodation wing, which allows parents to stay close to their children while they are in hospital.”
Ronan says PCH will strengthen Perth’s reputation as a centre for world-class paediatric care.
“Visitors who are familiar with the world’s leading paediatric hospitals have said that PCH is one of the best, if not the best, children’s hospital they have seen,” said Ronan.
