At the Path to Treaty event on Wednesday 15 February, the State Government announced that legislation will be introduced to Parliament next week that will enshrine a Treaty with Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This legislation would establish:
- A First Nations Treaty Institute and would outline the powers, function and composition of this body, and
- A five-member Truth Telling and Healing Inquiry which has elements of a Commission of Inquiry but is customised to have a culturally appropriate approach.
This builds upon the Path to Treaty announced in August 2022 and includes:
- A $300million Path to Treaty fund which would guarantee at least $10 million a year for the institute,
- The formation of the Interim Truth and Treaty body to co-design the Path to Treaty legislation, and
- The establishment of a Path to Treaty office, government treaty readiness committee and Ministerial Consultive Committee to build capacity across government agencies.
