Our Priorities 2018 – Outcome Focused
In 2018, the Property Council NSW team will continue to work towards better outcomes for the property industry and the NSW community.
We must maintain the momentum in 2018 and focus on the implementation of key government reforms needed to ensure our state continues to grow and prosper.
An election on the horizon in 2019 provides us with the opportunity to contribute to the public discussion on key issues such as tax, planning and growth, infrastructure, energy and housing. Our efforts in 2018 will focus on these areas and by working closely with you, our members, we can ensure a successful future of our industry and our state.
Tax and levies
A better system for assessing the accumulation of the taxes and levies placed on property development is critical. We can not continue to see the accumulation of taxes and charges placed on the price of a home and uncertainty in section 94 contributions undermining the supply of housing. We must see the State Government step up and support the funding of local infrastructure in key growth areas and put some of the budget surplus and stamp duty revenue into outcomes the community can benefit from.
Planning and Growth
We must move the narrative on our city’s future from what we don’t want to what we do want. Planning for growth must include the building blocks for creating great communities and enriching the character of our suburbs; our approach in 2018 will build off our industry campaign and will focus on what the property industry contributes to the community and how we can work together to achieve great outcomes.
An important aspect will be seeing the implementation of the plans from the Greater Sydney Commission and other key reforms from the State Government that will make it easier to build great places and ensure viable ideas are turned into successful outcomes.
Housing
Sydney still has the most unaffordable housing in Australia and people are still locked out of the market which means our work in still not done. Regional cities such as Wollongong and Newcastle are also facing their own affordability challenges. We must continue to unlock land, boost housing supply and put downward pressure on development costs. We must see action on key reforms released in 2017 such as the Medium Density Housing Code if we are to see real outcomes.
Energy
Energy policy and how our industry can drive down costs and benefit from new ways of producing energy are critical. Policy certainty from both our State and Federal Governments will ensure our industry and our State can benefit from affordable, clean, reliable energy.
Infrastructure
Sydney needs infrastructure that promotes growth and drives better outcomes for the community. Whether it be social infrastructure, key utility infrastructure or transport infrastructure; we must ensure it is planned for at a state-wide level and services the needs of growing communities. How infrastructure is funded is one issue where we must see leadership from the State Government in 2018 – certainty and transparency is critical.
As always, our advocacy team is always happy to speak with you.
