Opposition’s Plan for Property
The Property Council hosted the senior leadership of the Queensland Opposition for a lunch event on Friday 16 September 2016.
With the next State Election potentially due at any stage over the next twelve months, the Property Council was pleased to provide an opportunity to hear the alternate plan for the future growth of our state and industry.
Leader of the Opposition, Tim Nicholls MP, provided a keynote address covering a diverse range of topics from the foreign investor tax, to Cross River Rail and asset recycling. The overarching theme was establishing the confidence required to attract investment to Queensland.
Tim Nicholls committed to legislate to enshrine the exemption framework for the Additional Foreign Acquirer Duty, but stopped short of committing to scrap the foreign investor tax entirely.
On the critical issue of asset recycling, Tim Nicholls outlined that the election result had limited the Opposition’s options. He acknowledged that the Property Council and other groups were committed to continuing the public conversation on this issue and encouraged further exploration of what is and isn’t acceptable to the Queensland electorate.
Following lunch Tim Nicholls was joined on stage for a panel discussion by Deb Frecklington MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, State Development, Trade and Investment and Ian Walker MP, Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for Justice and Planning.
The key issues of budget repair, infrastructure delivery and planning were explored. The Opposition outlined their intention to not tinker with the current planning legislation, despite not supporting all of the provisions included in the Government’s final bills.
The Property Council thanks Tim Nicholls, Deb Frecklington and Ian Walker for taking the opportunity to share their alternate policies with the sector. This lunch would have also not been possible without the support of event sponsor Stockland.
