NT Chinese Investment Forum

“Chinese foreign investment” is a topical and complex subject. Even more so when discussed in the context of Australia. There are many features to the topic that transverse other important subjects such as exports, imports, agribusiness, private investment, real estate, tourism and diplomatic relations to name a few.

For a long time Darwin has been touted as the gateway to Asia. Most people would concede however that the movement of Chinese investment in real estate in Australia has shifted from the Top End and Central Australia in favour of the eastern seaboard. Is the time now right for SA and the NT to take a share of the Chinese investment in property on offer and catch-up with the bigger domestic neighbours given the level of saturation on the eastern seaboard?

The NT economy has shifted from its thriving status of 2009 to a very sobering outlook in 2018. Compare that to SA where the economy has remained stagnant but trended slowly upwards during the same period against a backdrop of having State-based manufacturing largely disappear. At the same time, there have been instances of great success in property development in both the NT and SA on the back of Chinese investment.

Can a continuation of Chinese investment be part of a broader solution to drive both the NT and SA economies onwards and upwards? If so, is Darwin the urbanised capital city it needs to be to continually attract property investment from Chinese investors?

How does that compare with the Adelaide CBD having the benefit of huge infrastructure spending by the SA government and a landscape of CBD university campuses?

What can the NT and SA governments achieve by working together on developing the Central Australia region to further attract Chinese investment in property?

All these questions and many more will be addressed in the forthcoming Finlaysons sponsored Property Council event “China Investment in Central Australia – A cross section of established and emerging frontline stories”. Come and hear Martin Kelly, Partner at Finlaysons, as he attempts to tackle this exciting topic with 3 uniquely different and expert panellists being Daryl Guppy (President, NT Branch Australia China Business Council), Mike Hughes (Vice President, Landbridge) and Nicho Teng (Managing Director Haneco Lighting and Greaton).
