NSW Local Council Elections 2017
NSW Local Council Elections will be held on Saturday 9 September 2017. There are 46 councils holding elections this year, 20 of them are for newly amalgamated council areas going to election for the first time.
Under the Local Government Act 1993, council elections are held on the second Saturday in September every four years. Last ordinary local government elections were held on 10 September 2016. Due to the NSW Government’s local government reforms, some council elections have been postponed to September 2017.
The number of councillors to be elected varies from council to council and range between 5 and 15 councillors (one of whom is the Mayor). Generally, the councillors elect one of their members to be the Mayor, while in some councils, the Mayor is elected by popular vote.
