NSW council elections produce wide ranging results
Two and a half million people went to the polls on September 10 to vote in their local council elections. It was also the first election where voting was compulsory for 23,000 businesses with most entitled to two votes.
Clover Moore was returned as Sydney Mayor, winning more than 60 per cent of the formal vote. Her main rival, Christine Forster, won 15 per cent of the vote.
Revitalising the CBD thoroughfare of George St as the City’s new light rail is built, boosting infrastructure spending and reducing emissions were all key priorities for the next term, Ms Moore said on Saturday
There were tighter results across the state with a swing towards the Labor party in the western Sydney council areas of Liverpool, Penrith, the Blue Mountains, Blacktown, Campbelltown and Camden.
Of the 129 local councils in NSW, the councillors in 78 were up for re-election. Councils that have merged with other councils or are earmarked for amalgamation will vote in September 2017.
