NSW Committees: 2018 Wrap Up
It’s been a great year for our NSW Committees, thank you to all of our Committee Members for all of their hard work and efforts in 2018 to advocate on key policy issues and continue pushing for changes within the property industry, we couldn’t achieve all that we do without you!
Highlights from our NSW Committees in 2018 include:
Commercial Office Committee
The Commercial Office Committee has focused on looking at emerging metropolitan office markets, key transport investment and the integration of over station development and the importance of world class design for our office buildings.
A new look and design for our Office Market Report events has also been implemented as well as new events in workplace design and culture, the Parramatta office market and conversations with leaders in office development.
Industrial Committee
The Industrial Committee has focused on two key policy streams. A focus on increasing allowable floorspace in inner city locations through changing the planning system to allow for greater height and FSR for warehouses, something critical given the growth in ecommerce.
This is in addition to unlocking serviced employment land in our city’s west, particularly round the new Western Sydney Airport and the Aerotropolis, to meet growing demand. Research has been commissioned to support both these key areas of focus. Events have focused on the Moorebank Intermodal and the importance of freight and vertical warehousing and automation and have been well attended.
Retirement Living Committee
The Retirement Living Committee have been immersed in the Government’s response to the Inquiry into Retirement Villages. Since the report was released the Committee has been involved in continuous consultation on the reforms, including the Retirement Village Amendment Bill.
The Committee also organised a very successful Retirement Living Forum, a full day event, focussing on issues relevant to the industry. Matt Kean, the Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, was a keynote speaker along with the Shadow Minister, Yasmin Catley, the Fair Trading Commissioner, Rose Webb and Kathryn Greiner.
Hotel Property Committee
The Hotel Property Committee held a successful Hotel Outlook event and have been focussed on ensuring that the Short-term Holiday reforms the NSW Government are implementing are measured to ensure there is a level playing field in the accommodation sector. The Committee is also involved in issues related to SEPP 65 and contributing to the speaker line-up of major conferences, like Hotels World.
Illawarra Chapter Committee
The Illawarra Committee’s focus this year has been on housing affordability and urban densification with the release of research in October – Housing Affordability in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven. This has involved stakeholder consultation and working with local councils and community housing organisations across the region to discuss various incentives and policy measures for improving affordability.
The Illawarra Committee together with the Future Directions Committee have held a number of successful events including the Illawarra Outlook, a Senior Living Lunch, Women in Property Event, Future Directions’ Networking Events and a number of member briefings which have been introduced to the Illawarra in 2018.
Hunter Chapter Committee
The Hunter Chapter Committee has worked tirelessly this year in advocating for better planning processes and strategies for the positive growth of our communities. The Committee’s contribution to better infrastructure and growth planning for the region included critical engagement around the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan and the Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan. They have also provided important contribution to proposed changes to Special Infrastructure Contributions and continue to work with other regional stakeholders and government agencies to improve processes that make revitalisation and sustainability of our regions possible.
