New planning reforms being closely scrutinised

In early January, as most people were still enjoying their summer holiday, the NSW Government released proposed amendments to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 aimed at reducing DA processing times and fast-tracking housing supply.

The reforms mark the Coalition Government’s second attempt to reform the NSW planning legislation, following the unsuccessful 2013 planning reforms introduced via the lapsed Planning Bill.

The reforms focus on:

  • Enhancing community involvement in shaping the built environment;
  • Improving upfront strategic planning to guide growth and development;
  • Greater transparency, balance and expertise in decision-making; and
  • Creating a system that is easier to understand, navigate and use.

A taskforce made up of members of the planning and residential committees is currently forming a response to the reforms.  If you would like further information please contact Cheryl Thomas at [email protected].
