Member Update: Strata Reform

The Property Council of Australia is calling on the WA Government and the Opposition to fast-track the passage of much needed strata reform bills in State Parliament before the state election.

Speaking at this week’s Strata Breakfast, Landgate Senior Lawyer Sean Macfarlane said that the reforms had been approved by Cabinet and a draft bill was being prepared to go to Parliament.

Macfarlane said Landgate remains committed to engaging shareholders, such as the Property Council in the drafting of the bill.

At the breakfast, the Property Council also made a commitment to work alongside Strata Community Australia to push for the reforms to be passed before the next state election.

“The Government has made a commitment to strata title reform and the introduction of community titles, however the industry needs the reforms to be implemented quickly to assist current projects being planned,” Property Council WA Executive Director Lino Iacomella said.

“The strata titles system is very important for the continued growth of Perth and major centers in Western Australia.

“The reforms will introduce community Titles, more efficient strata development laws and simpler processes for strata purchases and management.”

“Community titles will enable a greater mix of property uses in a development precinct including residential, retail and commercial, it will make planning for community developments easier and will reduce the cost for large-scale integrated developments like tourist resorts,” Lino Iacomella said.

“If WA wants to keep growing after the mining boom then reforms of industry regulations like strata laws are urgently required,” Lino Iacomella said.
