Melbourne new suburbs

The Victorian Government has announced 17 new suburbs for Melbourne’s growth corridors, representing an extra 100,000 lots of zoned land over the next two years.

In this announcement, the Government emphasised the PSP process’ ability to provide necessary service and infrastructure for these communities.

To help accelerate planning and approvals processes, further funding has been announced for the Government’s Streamlining for Growth program, which will help local governments reduce delays and unlock new land for development. While we welcome the new PSPs, the Property Council will continue to champion the need to finalise approval of PSPs that are ready for market.

The Property Council supports initiatives that reduce the costs, time and risks involved in planning processes because they are key levers to improving affordability and increasing industry investment and participation in delivering affordable housing.

This initiative will bolster efforts to make Victoria’s planning system faster and simpler through the Smart Planning reforms, unveiled in the 2016-17 State Budget.

An inclusionary housing pilot on surplus government land was also announced. This provides developers with the opportunity to deliver a proportion of social housing in return for receiving a discounted price for the land. A further pipeline of projects will be identified by Land Use Victoria with a further $1.9 million of funding.

The Property Council has welcomed the announcement today as a confidence boost to developers and homebuyers alike. We commend the Government’s continued focus on streamlining planning processes, which will promote greater investment by the business community.
