Making the Plan a Reality Breakfast

A month on from the release of the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan, the Property Council hosted a breakfast event exploring the reaction of local government to the State Government’s proposed blueprint for the region’s future growth.

Springfield Land Corporation’s Managing Director, Raynuha Sinnathamby, opened the breakfast by providing an industry response to the draft plan. Raynuha outlined how the Government has paid close attention to the industry’s perspectives on what will make a successful regional plan, including adopting some of the initiatives proposed by the Property Council. However, industry remains concerned with how the plan will be implemented on the ground.

Following breakfast, a question and answer session was held with Cr Paul Pisasale – Mayor of the City of Ipswich, Cr Graham Quirk – Lord Mayor of Brisbane, and Cr Luke Smith – Mayor of the City of Logan. As the responsibility for making the plan a reality will largely fall to local government, the Property Council’s members were keen to hear how each council intends to implement the draft plan’s provisions.

While praise was given to the State Government for their collaborative approach with local governments to date, the local government leaders outlined that collaboration in the implementation of the plan will be critical it its success.

The employment targets set out in the plan were discussed by each Mayor. All were in agreement that the creation of employment zones throughout the entire SEQ region was a priority. 

Each Mayor was confident that they could accommodate the growth targets set out for their local government areas, but warned that infrastructure funding would be critical to allaying community concerns about local growth.

The Mayors are working through the SEQ Council of Mayors to develop their own year vision for the region, which will feed into plans to develop a UK style City Deal with the State and Federal Governments.
