Making the Plan a Reality
The Property Council of Australia has released a comprehensive position paper to inform the Queensland Government’s review of the South East Queensland Regional Plan (SEQRP).
The Making the Plan a Reality position paper establishes the property industry’s expectations regarding key features of a successful SEQRP, and importantly, outlines what will be required to restore the industry’s faith in the value of statutory regional planning.
Key issues and lessons from past plans have been identified in the paper against the Government’s identified SEQRP themes of Grow, Live, Connect, Sustain and Prosper. The Property Council has also proposed an additional theme of Achieve and articulated key measures and necessary actions that will be required to make the new plan more than a theoretical exercise.
The Property Council is seeking an SEQ Regional Plan containing a year vision and a 25 year strategic planning framework that:
- Has housing affordability, housing choice and access to employment as central principles
- Ensures there is timely delivery of an adequate supply of zoned land to meet the diverse housing and employment desires of South East Queenslanders
- Effectively utilises existing infrastructure, and provides for the timely delivery of new infrastructure
- Provides certainty to the community, industry and local government about the future growth pattern of the region
- Resolves land use and policy conflicts, particularly in relation to environmental matters
- Allows for flexibility and innovation to cater for the ever-increasing pace of change, and the influence of emerging trends on land-use patterns
- Is measured, delivered, and where required, enforced.
The Property Council will utilise the Making the Plan a Reality position paper to complement their advocacy efforts over the next few months. A draft version of the revised regional plan is expected to be released by the Government in early October.
