Lunch with the Lord Mayor Graham Quirk

“In terms of momentum, this city has it,” declared Lord Mayor Graham Quirk at the Property Council’s ‘Queensland Lunch: Annual Lord Mayor’s Address.’

Over 320 people attended the sold-out event to gain insight into Brisbane City Council’s plans relating to infrastructure, housing affordability, City Deals and the ‘Brisbane Future Blueprint.’

The Lord Mayor provided an overview of Council’s $1.3 billion expenditure on infrastructure, that will pave the way for high frequency public transport services, allowing the Brisbane Metro to cut travel times, reduce congestion and improve frequency. The infrastructure spend has also seen funds allocated to Kingsford Smith Drive, the Inner-City Bypass, City Cat services and Brisbane bikeways.

While discussing the popular headline topics of housing affordability and national population growth, the Lord Mayor reinforced that Council is already planning for population growth and has a clear vision for the future, “Housing affordability is still there. Brisbane is a great place to live, work and invest.”

The Lord Mayor explained that politicians cannot ignore the 188,000 new dwellings that are estimated to be needed under the SEQ Regional Plan, adding that the ‘Brisbane Future Blueprint’ encourages residential developments of all types. The Lord Mayor also made reference to 63 aged care and retirement village development applications that have recently been lodged with Council.

Turning his attention to another headline topic from recent weeks, the Lord Mayor mentioned the political unrest witnessed in Canberra and the effect it could have on securing an SEQ City Deal, “We want to keep the momentum going on it This is miles bigger than any other City Deal we have seen in the country, affecting over 3 million people. It will not be an overnight change.”

The Property Council has long advocated for an SEQ City Deal, which would provide the necessary framework for government, industry and the community to work together to increase economic activity.

The Property Council would like to thank the Lord Mayor Graham Quirk for taking the time to update members on his Council’s plan for Brisbane. We would also like to thank our Major Sponsor, Multiplex and Supporting Sponsor, Ray White.
