Learning from the legends

The property industry has many success stories to tell, and then there are the legends. At The Property Congress held in Sydney in September, three of these legends will pass on wisdom and lessons learned from a lifetime in the industry.

In a session moderated by Turi Condon, property editor at The Australian, three of Australia’s property legends, Nigel Chamier, Lyn Shaddock and Jack Ritch (pictured), will give attendees the benefit of their accumulated knowledge and experience and will then answer questions from the floor.

Nigel Chamier OAM is chairman of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation and executive chairman of NAC Investments Pty Ltd.

Chamier has recently overseen the acclaimed $215-million restoration of Brisbane City Hall and has played a major role in the development of landmark Brisbane buildings, including Central Plaza and the Riverside Centre on Eagle Street.

After 20 highly successful years with Jones Lang LaSalle, Chamier retired as joint managing director in 1991.

Chamier’s other key appointments have included chairman of the Office of Economic Development for the City of Brisbane Limited and a founding directorship of The Brisbane Airport Corporation.

Lyn Shaddock KSS is a director of Growthpoint Properties Australia.

Over 52 years in the property development and ownership industries, Shaddock has been involved with 25 major developments in a wide range of economic conditions.

The properties with which he has been involved have consistently been successful and he has been credited with identifying four cycles and profiting from the changes. He has served on six listed Australian company boards.

Shaddock attended the initial meeting that led to the formation of the Building Owners & Managers Association, now known as the Property Council of Australia, and served over the years in a variety of roles, including joint chairman of the first Congress.

Jack Ritch is chairman of Galileo Japan Funds Management.

Ritch retired as chairman of AMP Capital Investors in 2009; he had been managing director of the company from 2004 to 2009 and, prior to that, director of property. He held many other roles in the AMP Group, which he joined in 1958.

Ritch has also held the following positions:

• chairman of Australia Pacific Airport Corporation – owner and operator of Melbourne and Launceston airports until 2012
• chairman of AMP’s Aged Care Group until 2014
• national president of the Property Council of Australia from 1990 to 1992, and
• inaugural chairman of the Shopping Centre Council of Australia from 1998 to 2000.
