Leading Women in Property Lunch

The Property Council’s annual, Leading Women in Property Lunch at Aria Restaurant took place yesterday, featuring an excited crowd and terrific speaker line up.

Under the banner of Leadership and Influence, the Co-Mayors of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Village, Sara Carrigan OAM, Professional Cyclist and Australian Olympic Gold Medalist, and Mark Stockwell, Australian three-time Olympic Medalist and Managing Director of Stockwell, provided the audience with a high-energy insight into the lessons learned through their involvement with elite sports and events.

In a panel conversation moderated by Like Fraser, CEO of Howard Smith Wharves, Sara and Mark discussed a range of topics including motivation, handling success and failures, the importance of diversity within the work place, and the exciting challenges they faced as Co-Mayors during the Commonwealth Games.

When asked about the importance of having Mayors of both genders, Mark explained, “We were really on a world stage, but it was important to show the world, in this country men and women can do that together.”

Sara also acknowledged the difficulties that women can face in the workplace, explaining there is still more work to do regarding diversity.

As it does every year, the event also raised proceeds for the Property Industry Foundation (PIF), which is dedicated to helping the serious and persistent problem of youth homelessness.

Over $2300 was raised for PIF through a raffle with numerous fantastic prizes, which took place after the formalities.

The Property Council would like to thank Luke, Mark and Sara for their open and honest conversation,  Multiplex for being major sponsor of the event, and all of the businesses who so generously donated goods and services as part of the Property Industry Foundation raffle.

It was a full house at Aria restaurant on Thursday for the Property Council’s Leading Women in Property Lunch. The event focused on the perennial industry challenge of attracting and retaining talent.

New research, unveiled at the lunch, revealed that many women do not choose careers in property, rather they ‘accidentally’ find themselves in the industry. This raised the broader question of how we can collectively work together to promote property as the first choice of more women at a younger age.

Discussing the research and how the industry should respond were; Selina Short – Oceania Business Development Leader – EY, Greg Chubb – Head of Retail Charter Hall, Josephine Sukkar – Principal – Buildcorp. The discussion was moderated by Property Council Chief Operating Officer, Kathy Mac Dermott.

Many industry responses to this challenge were explored, including the Property Council’s 100 Women in Property initiative. The 100 Women program is part of our commitment to achieve a significant and sustainable increase in the number of women in leadership positions in the property industry, and a pipeline of future leaders. It involves a personal commitment from Property Council committee members to champion women in their business sphere who they believe would benefit from further networking and professional development opportunities.

Throughout the lunch, over $1,900 was raised for the ‘Givit’ online giving portal.

This event would not have been made possible without the generous support of sponsor Brookfield Multiplex and support sponsor Architectus. The Property Council would also like to thank our panel of industry leaders for sharing their insights on this important conversation.
