Labor’s infrastructure plan released

A NSW Labor Government will defer the second harbour rail crossing, strip back WestConnex and reduce the spend on infrastructure without the funds from asset recycling.

The Opposition has released the plan today – describing it as ‘modest’ given it is opposed to the Government’s proposal to lease the poles and wires.

The headline elements of the plan include:

  • Deferring a start on a second rail crossing till at least 2021-22 (against the Government’s proposal of 2017)
  • Axing the link on WestConnex between St Peters and Haberfield – and pausing and re-designing the proposed M5 duplication
  • Potentially re-allocate funds currently earmarked for the start of a light rail network to service Parramatta
  • End the current program to remove heavy rail – and replace it with light rail – under the Newcastle CBD Renewal strategy

The Property Council’s NSW Executive Director Glenn Byres said there is no case to stall major projects when funds were available from asset recycling.

“Major new projects give Sydney a chance to enhance its standing as a global city, lift productivity and connect new and emerging markets across the metropolitan area.”
