International acclaim for Wollongong CentralHDR Rice Daubney’s design for the GPT Group’s Wollongong Central project has been lauded at the 2015 Architizer A+Awards, winning both the Popular Choice and the Juror’s Choice A+ Awards in the Shopping Centre category. Competing in what is said to be the world’s largest awards program for architecture, Wollongong Central was up against more than 3000 entries from 80 countries. Now in its third year, the Architizer A+Awards reached more than 100 million viewers and received 200,000 public votes.The Wollongong Central expansion officially opened in October 2014. The 18,000 sqm expansion features 75 specialty stores, a Coles supermarket, Target discount department store and more than 6 car spaces. According to The GPT Group’s head of development, Anthony McNulty, the company “sought to deliver a city centre destination that responds to the needs of the local community while celebrating the unique traditions and cultures of the region.”HDR Rice Daubney’s director of retail and mixed use, Susanne Pini, who grew up in Wollongong, notes that “it’s not a building the city deserved, but rather a building deserving of the city.”The awards were presented at a formal gala in New York City on 14 May.
