Insights into retirement village life

Last month we were delighted to have NSW Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, Victor Dominello MP and Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe join us for a tour of two retirement villages in Sydney.

It’s crucial for our policymakers and regulators to understand the operations of villages and the experience of residents.

Visiting Leisure Lea Gardens and Waterbrook Greenwich brought to reality why 70 per cent of residents are extremely or very happy living in villages, with 90 per cent being satisfied with their move.  The sense of warmth and community was tangible. It was an eye-opening insight into the future joys of retirement.

Leisure Lea Gardens is nestled in the Northern suburb of Marsfield, with apartments set within a beautifully landscaped setting. Residents can choose from one or two bedroom Independent Living apartments or smaller, modern Supported Living units if they need extra care. They also have access to services such as hairdressing and a doctor on site.

It was an extra treat having Leisure Lea residents accompany us on the tour.  John greeted us at the door in suit and tie. He chuckled about how he was turning the big 8-0 this year. He was content talking about how residents loved being at Leisure Lea and the strength of the social networks that formed.  He described how his friends regularly met to play darts together and drink ginger beer – it didn’t matter whether or not you were good at darts, it was the comradery that counted.

Richard was endearingly excited to have guests to show around the village. Normally he would be helping set up for Friday Happy Hour, but he had been given leave to come on the tour. He showed us the computer room and told us how he was the President of the Computer Club. He showed us the collection of board games and books that were available to residents and laughed about how they all needed large print books now as that is what happens when you get old. His enthusiasm and constant smile was infectious.

A short drive away is Waterbrook Greenwich – the most apt word to describe it is “Wow!” Aptly called a Resort, as soon as you walk in, you know you are in a different kind of place. A pure sense of grandeur – a spacious lobby looking out over artful water features and even the air is tinted with the smell of coconut and vanilla.

With access to a grand library, heated swimming pool, gym, private movie theatre, billiards room, hairdressing salon, lounge and bar, the decadence of Waterbrook Greenwich induces awe.

Thank you to Leisure Lea Gardens and Living Choice, and Waterbrook Greenwich and Lendlease, for hosting us.
