Infrastructure WA is vital reform

In front of 4 people at a Property Council industry breakfast event in Perth this week, the Premier Mark McGowan unveiled one the State Government’s major economic reform initiatives, the establishment of Infrastructure WA.

The model proposed for Infrastructure WA includes a 20 year state infrastructure strategy reporting directly to the Premier on all infrastructure matters, a board comprising government and independent members, and an independent chair with a casting vote.

Establishing Infrastructure WA is a key Property Council advocacy priority and it is supported widely by business, not-for-profit and community groups in WA.

Evidence from other states and globally shows that bodies like Infrastructure WA leads to more informed and timely business decisions; and local communities will have greater confidence that developments will be accompanied by necessary infrastructure like public transport to ease congestion.  WA can also expect to receive a better share of national infrastructure funding.

The Property Council congratulates the McGowan Government for honouring a major election commitment to establish Infrastructure WA and to commence consultation.  The model proposed for Infrastructure WA includes the best features of similar bodies around Australia and we urge all parties to support it in a bi-partisan manner.

The Property Council is participating in the six-week consultation process for IWA.  For more information see www.dpc.wa.gov.au/infrastructurewa
