Industry Responds to Rental Reforms

The Property Council has provided feedback to the Department of Housing and Public Works online forum, Open Doors to Rental Reform, which was launched to collect feedback from Queenslanders on their experiences living in, managing or owning rental properties, for the purpose of investigating state-wide rental reform.

The Property Council has raised concerns over possible changes suggested, emphasising that any decision to change existing laws and regulations should be made not only for the benefit of tenants, but also respects the role of landlords and body corporates, along with the implications for their investments.

Similar rental reforms are already underway in New South Wales and Victoria, allowing tenants more rights in regard to owning pets, placing limits on rental increases and providing protection against no-reason evictions.

While the Government is considering rental reforms, the Property Council has also used the opportunity to encourage the Government to support the emerging Build-to-Rent sector. Already successfully implemented in the UK and USA, the Build-to-Rent sector would address many tenant concerns, such as longer leases and security of tenure.
