INDUSTRY PROVIDES INSIGHTS ON SUBI EAST AS PROPERTY COUNCIL TEAM WITH LANDCORP
The Property Council is grateful to have been invited by LandCorp to hold a forum for members this week during the early stages of the State Government’s Subi East project. The forum provided an opportunity for industry to gain insights on the planning status of this strategic infill precinct, and to offer our thoughts and perspectives on how development of the site should unfold.
The Subi East project will involve rejuvenation of 35.6ha of land to create an exciting new north-eastern gateway to Subiaco. The site is centred on the new Inner City College and adjacent heritage-listed oval, and importantly includes significant redevelopment potential around West Leederville Station and on the Princess Margaret Hospital landholding. The overarching objective for the precinct is to respect and reflect the rich heritage of the area while realising the importance of its prominent location right on the fringe of Perth’s CBD.
Attendees were asked to consider and provide feedback on various topics during the workshop: vision and objectives; governance, planning and scheme framework; design and sustainability requirements; market conditions; capital environment and transactional structure.
The major themes that emerged were the importance of connectivity and the relationship with surrounding areas; the need for development that will allow a truly multi-generational demographic to live, work and recreate in the precinct; and a preference for ongoing and genuine collaboration between government, private sector and the community as the planning, implementation and life of the project progresses.
There was consensus around a vision for an accessible, vibrant, liveable and productive precinct that fully delivers on the potential it holds. Critically, attendees agreed that as a priority Government project, the goal should be to maximise long term social return.
The forum was a successful collaboration between government and industry, and the Property Council is delighted to be part of facilitating important discussions that will help shape a better Perth.
