In the Spotlight: NT Leader of the Opposition, Michael Gunner

The Property Council sat down with Leader of the Opposition, Michael Gunner to get some insight into the newly appointed leader and what we can expect at the Property Council’s upcoming State of the Union event.

What do you love about the Territory?

It’s home – I have wonderful family and friends here. All my favourite things are captured by our casual spirit – the markets, East Pt, the clubs in my patch from Rails to Ski, ducking out onto the harbour to throw a line in – we are a really easy place to live, positive and friendly. Going to Tennant and Alice always feels like I’m coming home.

What made you get into Politics?

My short answer when asked is; I love working with people. I love doing things and politics lets you do both. My longer answer is; I hate saying goodbye. It’s something we do a lot in the Territory. We are a place that has a lot of population churn. I was always saying goodbye to friends at school, uni, work and sport and still am now. I want to make the place I love even better so even more people will call it home and stay here longer.

Where do you see the Territory going over the next three years?

As the Icthys Inpex construction phase winds down I see a period of critical infrastructure investment to prepare us for our next period of really strong growth, to keep jobs in the Territory to keep things ticking. Managing that transition well is going to take steady hands with a long term view.

What can we expect from you at the State of the Union?

People will get an understanding of how my experiences growing up in the Territory have shaped my values and how they drive me in my role as Leader. I will talk about the challenges that face us, our plans and why I am positive about the Territory’s future.
