Identifying opportunities for Townsville

Townsville’s Federal, State and Local Government representatives shared their vision for the region’s economic future last Friday at the Property Council’s annual ‘Three tiers of Townsville’ luncheon.

Many key local challenges and opportunities were identified by the three panel members; Cr Jenny Hill – Mayor of Townsville, Dale Last MP – State Member for Burdekin, and Ewen Jones MP – Federal Member for Herbert.

With the property industry accounting for 10.6% of all full time jobs within the Townsville local government area and generating over $1 billion of Gross Product, continued property industry growth was identified as key to the region’s economic future.

The Townsville Waterfront Priority Development Area proposal and the new stadium and entertainment precinct projects were highlighted as initiatives requiring collaboration between all three levels of government in order to become a reality.

All panellists expressed support for large government project contracts to be broken down into smaller components in order to allow local contractors greater opportunity to compete for work.

Lachlan Heywood, Editor of the Townsville Bulletin, moderated a question and answer session which allowed members of the audience to further examine each panellist’s approach to local matters of concern.

The Property Council would like to thank Jenny Hill, Dale Last and Ewen Jones for taking the time to speak at the event.  Special thanks must also go to our moderator Lachlan Heywood and to the sponsor for the event Rider Levett Bucknall, our Townsville corporate partner – RCP, and our after drinks networking sponsor Townsville Earthmoving.
