The Deputy Premier on Thursday, 8 September announced an expanded role for the Queensland Government’s Housing Supply Expert Panel. The panel will now provide advice on actions that councils need to take to address housing supply shortages. In providing this advice, its remit will be expanded from South East Queensland to the entire state.

The announcement followed the release of A home for every Queenslander, the Property Council’s policy paper on housing supply, as well as research showing 220,000 people – a population the size of Townsville and Gladstone combined – are seeking to leave southern states and relocate to Queensland in the coming years.

The policy paper sets out a range of tangible actions the Queensland Government can take to address the current housing shortage. While the paper focuses on increasing the availability of developable land and streamlining the planning system, it also calls for action from Government to incentivise the delivery of Built-to-Rent housing to quickly increase the supply of rental accommodation.
